Buying and selling rules
Last updated 2026-10-12
Draft for review by counsel.
These rules apply to everyone who sells or buys art on Interartive. They draw on what works on long-running marketplaces and auction houses: honest descriptions, offers that mean something, and safe ways to pay and hand over a work.
For sellers
- Sell only what you may sell. You made the work or own it and have the right to sell it. Works by another artist need the artist's name on the label ("Artist" field).
- Describe it honestly. Title, artist, year, medium, edition, the real size (it is hung at that size) and condition. Mention damage, restoration and framing. Photos must be of the actual work.
- Answer offers. Accept the offer you choose, or set others aside. Don't accept two offers for the same work.
- Agree the details in the chat. Price, how the buyer pays, and delivery or pickup (where and when). Keep the conversation in the Interartive chat so there is a record.
- Mark it sold once you have been paid and the work is handed over or shipped. Other open offers close automatically.
- No shill bidding. Never bid on your own work or ask friends, family or team members to bid it up. Owners and their team can't bid on works they sell.
- No fee or safety workarounds once payments on Interartive are on (for example asking buyers to pay outside a held payment to avoid fees).
For buyers
- Offers and bids are serious. Make an offer only if you mean to buy at that price.
- Use the chat. Agree payment and pickup or delivery there. Pay only by a method you trust and that can be traced.
- Check the work at pickup, or confirm the condition report and photos before paying for shipping.
- Rate the sale honestly once the work is marked sold.
Paying and handing over safely
- Good: paying in person at pickup in a public place; methods with buyer protection; checks only after they have fully cleared.
- Never: gift cards, cryptocurrency or wire transfers to people you don't know; "overpayments" with a request to send back the difference; sharing a verification code, card number or password; "shipping agents" who collect for someone else.
- Interartive shows a warning when a chat mentions these patterns, and our team reviews flagged chats.
Shipping and delivery
Agree who pays for packing, shipping and insurance. Use a carrier that gives tracking. For valuable or fragile works use a fine-art shipper. [When delivery through Interartive opens: local delivery in New York City and the tri-state area, and art shipping partners for the rest of the US.]
When something goes wrong
Talk in the chat first. If it can't be solved, report it from the chat (⋯ › Report a problem). While payments on Interartive are off, Interartive is not a party to the sale and cannot refund it, but we act on fraud and broken rules: warnings, limits, removal and, where appropriate, reports to the authorities.
